What is a letter ?

A letter is a written message sent from one individual to another.

1) History of letter writing :

History of letter writing is very interesting. It started in a time when men became a little more civilised and invented the process to communicate with people at long distances. Gradually it became more organized and dignified. The great Roman poet Ovid wrote many letters in verse in his ‘Heroides’. In ancient times secret letters were carried by pigeons. Letters written by eminent personages are of great historical value, such as Nehru’s letters to his daughter Indira or the letters of Winston Churchill. The format of letters has been changed and reformed several times, and now it has acquired a permanent place in our educational framework.

2) style of letter writing :

Letter writing is an art and without cultivating it one cannot master it. Letters should be written in distinct and simple language without disturbing its gracefulness. However, the style of each letter depends on its subject matter and on the writer’s relation with the person to whom it is addressed to . while a personal letter should be written in a conversational style, a formal or a business letter , on the country , should be short, explicit and compact , as prof . Meiklejohn truly stated ,” Businessmen have no time for flowery language” . So, it should be written in direct statement but in a police manner , so that no confusion arises.
